Well, we don't have Robert Redford, but Bend, Oregon does have an independent film festival that may someday give Sundance a run for its money! Plus, Bend is just as beautiful (if not more so) than Park City, Utah, and way less crowded. In its fifth year this fall, the BendFilm festival is a popular attraction for tourists and residents alike. This year's event will be held Thursday, October 9, 2008 - Sunday, October 12, 2008 right in historic downtown. As of the date of this publication, filmmakers can officially submit their work for consideration at the 2008 festival.
In 2006, the BendFilm Festival featured more than 70 independent films, shown on four different screens. In addition to movies, attendees can enjoy filmmaking lectures, and other special events. There are plenty of parties to go along with the festive atmosphere. Drawing thousands of alternative film enthusiasts, this year's event may top over 18,000 attendees. Not bad for a town of only 75,000!
Among the four main venues, is the fabulously renovated historic Tower Theatre on downtown Wall Street. Take a step back in time, while enjoying avant guard fare. Overall, the event is a favorite of movie buffs and artists alike. The street scene buzzes with gossip and casual criticism of the films being shown. Its one of the best four days for the town each year.
Movies shown at the festival are not your typical Hollywood fare. Although its still in its infancy, BendFilm is attracting unique alternatives to mainstream entertainment, and very enthusiastic participants. Films are accepted in the following categories:
Narrative Features
Documentary Films
